If you're missing a tooth — or facing the prospect of losing one — a dental implant is the closest thing to a natural replacement available in modern dentistry. At Amwell Street Dental Practice in Hoddesdon, our implant surgery is carried out by Dr Ravi Kumar, an experienced implant surgeon with a long track record of successful outcomes.
What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium fixture that is placed into the jawbone, acting as an artificial root. Once the implant has integrated with bone, a custom crown is attached on top — looking, feeling and functioning just like a natural tooth.
Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, support a bridge replacing several teeth, or even anchor a full denture for patients who have lost most or all of their teeth.
What Does Treatment Involve?
Treatment is carefully planned around your individual needs and typically follows these stages:
Consultation (£75) — Dr Ravi Kumar will discuss your options in detail, explain the process, and answer any questions. A 3D CBCT scan is usually needed so the area can be fully assessed before treatment is planned.
Extraction (if needed) — If a tooth requires removal first, this is usually carried out by Dr Kumar to preserve as much bone as possible for the implant.
Implant placement — The titanium implant is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Most patients find this more straightforward than expected.
Healing — A few months are allowed for the implant to integrate fully with the bone. During this time a temporary solution may be possible (though not always)
Crown fitting — Once integration is confirmed, your permanent crown is fitted, completing your new tooth.
The full process from consultation to final crown typically takes 6–12 months depending on the complexity of your case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I suitable for implants?
Most adults in good general health are suitable for implants. The key requirement is sufficient bone in the area to support the implant. Sometimes additional treatment (bone grafting proteins) may be needed if there is insufficient bone. Dr Kumar will assess this at your consultation using a 3D scan.
Does the procedure hurt?
Implant placement is carried out under local anaesthetic and most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. Some mild soreness and swelling in the days following is normal.
How long do implants last?
With proper care and regular dental check-ups, implants can last many years — often a lifetime. The crown on top may eventually need replacing after 10–15 years depending on wear.
Can implants be used to secure dentures?
Yes. Implant-retained dentures are an excellent option for patients who find conventional dentures unstable.
Often 2-6 implants are needed depending on upper vs lower and other factors.
Conveniently located for patients from Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, Ware, Hertford, Cheshunt and Nazeing.
